Church Army. Founded in 1882 by the Revd Wilson Carlile, a 35-year-old Church of England curate in Kensington, its organization was consciously modelled on that of the Salvation Army, even to the use of the military title of ‘captain’ for its officers. Like Booth's Salvation Army, Carlile's Church Army was dedicated to evangelism and social and moral welfare work among the poor and disadvantaged. A predominantly lay organization, including men and women, in recent years some members have been accepted for ordination. Carlile remained closely involved with the Church Army for sixty years, until his death in 1942.
