Mountbatten, Louis, 1st Earl Mountbatten of Burma
Mountbatten, Louis, 1st Earl Mountbatten of Burma (1900–79) British admiral, great-grandson of Queen Victoria, uncle of Prince Philip. During World War II, Mountbatten directed (1942–43) commando raids upon Norway and France. In 1943, he was appointed Allied commander-in-chief in se Asia, and led operations against the Japanese in Burma. He accepted the Japanese surrender. Mountbatten was last viceroy (1947–48) of British India, overseeing the transition to independence. He died in an IRA bomb attack on his boat.
