Description:
Independent, 4-year, coed. Awards bachelor's degrees. Founded 1844. Setting: 200-acre small town campus. Endowment: $185 million. Educational spending 2003-04: $12,500 per student. Total enrollment: 1,273. Student-undergrad faculty ratio is 11:1. 1,060 applied, 82% were admitted. 39% from top 10% of their high school class, 79% from top quarter, 98% from top half. 11 National Merit Scholars, 42 class presidents, 29 valedictorians, 175 student government officers. Full-time: 1,242 students, 52% women, 48% men. Part-time: 31 students, 52% women, 48% men. Students come from 48 states and territories, 14 other countries, 61% from out-of-state, 99% 25 or older, 83% live on campus, 2% transferred in. Required for some: 2 recommendations, interview. Entrance: very difficult. Application deadline: Rolling. Notification: continuous until 7/1.
Costs Per Year:
Application fee: $15. Comprehensive fee: $23,500 includes full-time tuition ($16,500), mandatory fees ($400), and college room and board ($6600). College room only: $3200. Room and board charges vary according to board plan. Part-time tuition: $650 per semester hour.
Collegiate Environment:
Orientation program. Drama-theater group, choral group, student-run newspaper. Social organizations: 45 open to all; national fraternities, national sororities; 33% of eligible men and 44% of eligible women are members. Most popular organizations: Inter-Varsity Christian Fellowship, Varsity H-Club, Student Federation, Young Life, College Republicans. Major annual events: homecoming, Parents' Weekend, Greek Week. Student services: health clinic, personal-psychological counseling. Campus security: 24-hour emergency response devices and patrols, late night transport-escort service, controlled dormitory access. 900 college housing spaces available; all were occupied in 2003-04. Freshmen guaranteed college housing. On-campus residence required through sophomore year. Options: men-only, women-only housing available. Mossey Learning Center plus 3 others with 240,000 books, 61,400 microform titles, 1,650 serials, 8,000 audiovisual materials, an OPAC, and a Web page. Operations spending 2003-04: $1.1 million. 188 computers available on campus for general student use. A campuswide network can be accessed from student residence rooms and from off campus. Staffed computer lab on campus.
Community Environment:
Hillsdale is a county seat located in the south central part of the lower peninsula. In an agricultural region, it is a resort and industrial community, manufacturing automobile parts and accessories, and tool and die products. The area has bus service and a municipal airport.
