Schech, Marianne

Schech, Marianne, German soprano; b. Geitau, Jan. 18, 1914; d. May 22, 1999. She was educated in Munich. She made her operatic debut in Koblenz in 1937, and then sang in Munich (1939–41), Düsseldorf (1941–4), and at the Dresden State Opera (1944–51); also sang with the Bavarian State Opera in Munich. In 1956 she was named a Kammersängerin. On Jan. 22, 1957, she made her debut at the Metropolitan Opera in N.Y. as Sieglinde in Die Walküre; also made guest appearances in London, Vienna, and Hamburg. She retired from the stage in 1970 and devoted herself mainly to teaching.
