Payne, Anthony (Edward)

Payne, Anthony (Edward) , English composer and music critic; b. London, Aug. 2,1936. He studied at Dulwich Coll. and the Univ. of Durham (1958–61). He was a music critic for the London Daily Telegraph (1965–87) and the Independent (from 1987). In 1966 he married Jane Manning . Payne made a realization of the unfinished sketches of Elgar’s 3rd Sym. (1933) in 1998. His style of composition is structurally disciplined, but inwardly Romantic and inspired by northern moods and modes.
