Michaels-Moore, Anthony , English baritone; b. Essex, April 8, 1957. He studied with Denis Matthews at the Univ. of Newcastle (B.A., 1978), at the Royal Scottish Academy of Music and Drama in Glasgow, and with Eduardo Asquez and Neilson-Taylor. After winning the Pavarotti Competition in 1985, he appeared with Opera North in Leeds in 1986. In 1987 he made his debut at London’s Covent Garden in Jenûfa and at the English National Opera in London as Zurga in Les Pécheurs de perles. He made his U.S. debut with the Opera Co. of Philadelphia in 1989 as Guglielmo. In 1992 he created the role of Don Fernando in the stage premiere of Gerhard’s The Duenna in Madrid. Following an engagement as Posa with Opera North in 1993, he sang Licinius in La Vestale at Milan’s La Scala that year. In 1994 he was engaged as Figaro at the Vienna State Opera and as Sharpless at the Opéra de la Bastille in Paris. In 1995 he sang Simon Boccanegra at Covent Garden. He made his Metropolitan Opera debut in N.Y. as Marcello on Dec. 28, 1996. In 1997 he portrayed Macbeth at Covent Garden. In 1999 he sang Enrico in Lucia di Lammermoor at the Metropolitan Opera. Among his other roles are Escamillo, Hamlet, Falke, Belcore, Lescaut, Onegin, and Scarpia.
