Krips, Henry (Joseph)

Krips, Henry (Joseph), Austrian-born Australian conductor, brother of Josef Krips; b. Vienna, Feb. 10, 1912; d. Adelaide, Jan. 25, 1987. He studied in Vienna at the Cons, and the Univ. He made his conducting debut at Vienna’s Burgtheater in 1932, and subsequently was conductor in Innsbruck (1933–34), Salzburg (1934–35), and Vienna (1935–38). In 1938 he emigrated to Australia and became a naturalized Australian citizen in 1944. He conducted ballet and opera. He was principal conductor of the West Australia Sym. Orch. in Perth (1948–72) and the South Australia Sym. Orch. in Adelaide (1949–72); also made guest appearances in Europe. He was best known for his performances of light Viennese music.
