King, Robert (John Stephen)
King, Robert (John Stephen), English conductor and harpsichordist; b. Wombourne, June 27, 1960. He received an M.A. degree from St. John’s Coll., Cambridge. In 1979 he founded the King’s Consort, with which he presented many enterprising programs. He became particularly well known for his championship of the music of Purcell. In 1986 he also served as music director of the European Baroque Orch., and from 1987 of the National Youth Music Theatre. As a guest conductor, he appeared with various European orchs. He publ. the valuable biography Henry Purcell (London, 1994).
