Angerer, Paul
Angerer, Paul, Austrian conductor, teacher, and composer; b. Vienna, May 16, 1927. He received violin and piano lessons as a child; later he studied violin, piano, and composition at the Vienna Academy of Music. He was made a violist in the Vienna Sym. Orch. (1947), Zurich’s Tonhalle Orch. (1948), and Geneva’s l’Orchestre de la Suisse Romande (1949); then was 1st violist of the Vienna Sym. Orch. (1953–57). After serving as director and chief conductor of the Vienna Chamber Orch. (1956–63), he was first conductor at the Bonn Stadttheater (1964–66); then was music director of the Ulm Theater (1966–68), chief conductor of the Salzburg Landestheater (1967–72), and director of the South West German Chamber Orch. in Pforzheim (1971–82). In 1982 he founded the Concilium Musicum of Vienna for the performance of 17th and 18th century music on original instruments. From 1982 to 1992 he taught at the Vienna Hochschule für Musik. In 1977 he was made an Austrian Prof. Among his other honors were the Austrian State Prize (1956), the Theodor Kòrner Prize (1958), and the culture prizes of the city of Vienna (1983) and the State of Niederösterreich (1987).
